Fiverr and other tales

Post by Shana » Fri Jun 02, 2017 7:40 pm

Thought I'd pop in and say hi to everyone. I've been checking the forum daily, and responding to messages as I see them, but felt as if I hadn't contributed in a while.
I know that most of you have had a lot of success on Upwork and other platforms. Upwork is an excellent place to make long term clients. Beyond that, the site is organized nicely. It's simple to keep track of your earnings and to keep your contracts organized.

I did want to take a minute to offer assistance to anyone who would like to explore Fiverr. There's a common perception that Fiverr isn't worth your time if you're a full time freelancer, but I've found that not to be true.

After working on both Upwork and Fiverr for a while, I actually find the two sites to be comparable in terms of opportunity. On Upwork, your long term clients (if you're not paid hourly) will generally provide you with milestones. In the beginning of the contract, Upwork will deduct 20% of those earnings until you reach a certain threshold.

On Fiverr, you sell "gigs" but these gigs are still conducive to long term clients. Each gig sold is like a milestone. The downside is that there's no threshold where the earnings Fiverr takes will equate to 10% or 5%. Instead, it remains a steady 20%. That said, I've found very few clients who aren't willing to work around that.

There's also a misconception that you're required to create a $5 gig on Fiverr. This is NOT true. You can start your gig at any price you like, up to $995. I have gigs which are $300 at the onset. These are my Wordpress creation gigs, and it's REALLY easy to upsell a client even from that point. (Want me to install Jetpack? That's $20 please.)

Most of you here are writers, though. And with that in mind, I'll make the comparison to Upwork. On Upwork, it's possible that you'll have to take a few really crappy jobs in the beginning to get a few ratings. (Don't let that last TOO long if you choose to go that route.) After you get a few tests under your belt and a few 5 star reviews on your profile, you can apply for more reasonable jobs.

The same is true for Fiverr. If your gig is optimized properly in order for clients to find it, then you shouldn't have minion work for very long. Allow yourself to take 2 or 3 jobs which only pay $5 to $10 bucks. Yes, you're worth more than that. Yes, your time is more valuable than that. But it gets better.

Before long, as you get good ratings, your name will appear higher and higher up the search. After just a few measly paying gigs, you can bump up your rate.

Head to head, I do like Upwork better. It's much easier to find work on the site, and the pay is a lot faster. But I'd discourage you to not write off Fiverr. If anyone needs any tips, just ping me!

I must admit, I never really saw the value in Fiverr until I used it. I paid an artist to sketch a caricature of my father for his birthday. He was very good and had a long list of orders, but for $5 it seemed crazy. Then I actually ordered and changed my mind.

An extra $10 for color, an extra $5 for objects, for certain themes, for higher quality, etc., In the end the $5 became $50 and he did such a good job that I gave him a tip as well.

My only issues was that I couldn't think of an angle for writers to make as much money offering extras like that. Would definitely use it as an artist or even a voiceover expert though.

Different strokes I suppose. Maybe it's just because my background is in sales and I can trick people into doing just about anything. :)

I've been looking into learning more about book marketing and book cover design. Nearly everyone I talk to recommends using Fiverr to get a quality cover design. It's enough people recommending it that I will definitely consider it when it comes time to do my book cover!

I've always been curious about Fiverr but this thread has opened my eyes. I need to give it another look and see if I can make it work for me. Thanks!

Karen, if you give Fiverr a try, let us know how your experience with it goes. Shana has written several articles on Fiverr for this site too, she's our resident Fiverr expert. Most of my freelance platform experience is with Upwork although I've dabbled with Guru and Freelancer (.com) too. I've found a few clients via the Problogger job board as well as through others but I turn down projects weekly on Upwork from clients who approach me so I haven't had to do much "looking" for work at all in the last year.
