Admin Introduction

Post by PJ (Admin) » Sun May 14, 2017 4:15 pm

I never thought to introduce myself, but I suppose it only makes sense that I do.

My name is PJ Aitken and I created the FWU website and community, with help from a number of great writers, including Shana and Megan, who also help out with the FWU Community. I don't have a lot of free time to write on the site these days, so you won't see many articles under my name, but I still oversee everything that is published and I try to get involved where I can.

I began my career as a self-published author, writing under several pen names. I had tried to make it for over a decade and when I did, things went rather will for me. I sold over 100,000 books within the first 18 months and within 2 years I began working on Elance, which is now Upwork. I made it into the top 5 on that site and as I devoted more time to freelancing, I had less time for self-publishing. So, I signed a contract with a traditional publisher and after my agent recommended I write about my time as a freelancer, The Online Writer's Companion was born.

Freelancing has opened a lot of doors for me and I wouldn't be where I am today if not for it. I've learned how to create successful websites, I've made contacts in many industries and it's also made me a lot of money. The goal of that book, the FWU site and this community, was to help others do the same.

There is an often quoted stat that writers make just $6,000 a year on average. For me, it was closer to $0 for many years and then jumped up to considerably more than $6,000 for several more. I firmly believe that any writer can do the same with the right knowledge, and that knowledge can be found on this site.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask, but keep it on the forum so that everyone else can get involved as well. The other writers can help you as much as I can, and they're also much friendlier than I am :D
